5 Fun Ways to Teach Kids Math
Math is a critical life skill that all too often we experience painfully. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Here are five ways you can make math fun for kids.
Use Tools to Teach Math
I keep my kids mostly unplugged, but I love using technology to make math drills fun! Computer math games were my favorite way to drill math facts as a kid. Programs like Splash Math and Splash Math for Homeschoolers today make it possible to set goals for kids, practice skills through games, and track progress.
Make Math Time Quality Time
This summer, my son is doing math with my mom over Facetime. They’re working their way through a Pre-Algebra textbook. My mom spent the past two years doing the same thing with my oldest daughter. My kids look forward to this virtual daily connection to Grandma. They’re learning a ton of math and getting to know her too!
I spent hours these past two years helping my daughter Lily with math. We read the book together and solved problems together. She LOVED catching me making mistakes, as well as the times she solved a problem before me.
Splash Math is a single player program, but my kids enjoy watching each other play, even though they are working on different skills.
Play Math Games
There are so many fun math games that I wrote a blog post showcasing our favorite math games for kids.
It’s also fine to use a game as a reward for working through math lessons. That is, after all, the way math programs like Splash Math work! Work through something you need to learn or practice, then take a break and do something fun! Then work some more. The break helps kids relax and clears their brain so they can focus on what they need to learn.
Discover Math Humor
Most of my favorite math books incorporate humor! This is really important, because it helps kids see math as a fun subject. It also teaches kids that people who love math can be very funny!
Connect Math to Real Life.
Kids are smart! They are willing to work to learn anything if they see what role it plays in their everyday life. Math is a very important part of nature, which is why I collected a bunch of outdoor math activities for kids.
You can also use everyday life to teach math skills! Sports offer all sorts of math teaching opportunities. Cooking, budgeting, and sewing all use math too.
Splash Math incorporates everyday learning, including time telling and money.
