Life is expensive! Here are some of our favorite ways to save money to meet financial goals.

7 Easy Ways to Save Money

#1 Make a Budget

This is so important! If you’ve never made a budget before, I recommend tracking your spending for a couple of weeks first so that you know where the money is going. Track absolutely everything! You may be surprised at how quickly small charges add up.

#2 Get Creative

I’ve made new clothes out of old clothes, gone to talks for the free food, and found endless sources of free entertainment while living under tight budgets. I’ve also gotten creative with ways to earn money – from cleaning jobs to mending jobs to childcare to academic jobs that I was actually trained for and creative jobs I have a talent and have developed skills for!

#3 Notice What You Have

It’s so easy to get caught up in what you don’t have! If you make time to notice what you do have, you’ll feel more contented and be less tempted to spend money.

#4 Buy Secondhand

When you do need to buy material goods, you can find many things in good quality at secondhand shops. I’m also a huge fan of clothing swaps and accepting hand-me-downs from friends.

#5 Figure Out Your Priorities

Make sure you are paying for things that truly matter to you. Don’t spend money on things because they matter to most people if they aren’t that important to you. You’re the one living your life.

#6 Shop Sales Wisely

Sales are so tempting! By all means, use them for things you need. But let a sale tempt you into a store you wouldn’t be visiting otherwise. You’ll likely find something to buy, but it’s doubtful it’s something you actually need.

#7 Think Long Term

Keep longterm financial goals in mind when budgeting. What do you want five years ago? Ten years ago? What do you need to do now to get there?

  1. I agree with you about the importance of shopping for clothes wisely. Don’t forget to take advantage of the end-of-season sales to save money! Also, try finding pieces that can be easily paired with other items in your wardrobe so you can mix and match outfits without having to keep purchasing new clothes!

  2. Great tips! Couponing too! My kids like that show Extreme Couponing. I can never do it to that extent, but simply using coupons for things that we actually normally buy is a great way to save. Also to buy in bulk for things that you know that you will use up and that won’t go bad. Also canning things you grow yourself or get at a good price at peak season.

    1. All great tips! Someday I will get brave and give canning a try. Maybe even this summer, now that I have a genuinely nice kitchen to can in.

  3. Great tips! I love making handmade gifts but usually spend more on materials than I would have on buying a gift. Now I’m trying to make things from what I already have at hand and I’m amazed at how much I do have.
