Letters to Ethan

Letters to Ethan: A Grandfather’s Legacy of Life & Love was sent to me by Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists to review. All four of my grandparents have provided a lot of influence and inspiration to me throughout my life, so I liked the concept behind the book. My grandparents would agree with most of the advice given in the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse collection of quotes heading each letter.

But, somehow, I didn’t like the book as much as I wanted to. I feel like having the letters addressed to Ethan without knowing anything about Ethan (other than that he’s a boy, and the author’s grandson) makes it difficult to thoroughly enjoy the book. I kept finding myself wondering if I had Ethan’s permission to read the letters. I have a feeling that I might like the book more if the “Dear Ethan” and “I love you, Ethan. Grandpa” were left off of each chapter – or if more information were shared about Ethan.

Have your grandparents played a large role in your life? If so, what is the most valuable lesson they’ve taught you? Among many lessons, all four of my grandparents have shown me, over and over, the importance of seeing the positive in each of life’s challenges.

  1. My grandparents were fantastic examples, and I particularly take away from their lives their commitment to service and willingness to work hard.
