Hi Lorraine,

The African continent is superimposed on the United States in this image to show the African heritage of many United States citizens. It is not drawn to any scale, but the color red and the placement is symbolic of a heart. Yes, the African continent is a VERY large place – and Africa has influenced American culture in many wonderful ways as shown through the picture books featured in this post.

I don’t think I’d seen any of those before, which is unusual (usually I’ve seen half of the list already). I’ll have to see if our library has any of these.

Great list of books! My son is reading Henry’s Freedom Box in 5th grade and they saw a play on it as well as part of their slavery unit. Many other favorites of ours are on your list too!
