How Did September Go?
What You'll Find on This Page
Compared to our frenetic August multi country, September was a quiet month.
We spent most of month up in Edinburgh, and then moved down to Oxford.
We’ll be in Oxford for the rest of this month, and at the beginning of the month we moved into the house we’ll stay in for the remainder of the year. It’s very exciting to be able to stay in one place for a while!
I’m homeschooling this fall, and I wrote a lot of homeschool curriculum reviews in September:
- Using Puzzles to Learn About the Human Body
- Online Film Acting Class for Teens
- Learn Java Programming at Home
- 5th Grade Science
- 5th Grade Writing
- High School Writing
We enjoyed returning to our favorite Edinburgh sites, including Edinburgh Castle and Craigmillar Castle. We used buses to get around, as always.
The Queen died while we were in Edinburgh, and that changed a lot of our plans since large parts of the city were shut down. My kids really felt they were living history.
I managed to tear a muscle in my left calf right after we arrived in Oxford, so that slowed down activities here for a bit. That injury will take weeks, maybe months, to completely heal, but for now it’s better and I’m grateful.
One highlight this month was returning to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. It was a favorite when we were in London four years ago, and we loved it every bit as much our second time round.
What About September Goals?
My September goals were to enjoy our time in Edinburgh, settle into homeschooling, and write up my remaining homeschool reviews. I did pretty well! We are still settling into our homeschool schedule, but I blocked off time for the subjects my children need daily one to one tutoring from me on (math for the three younger kids; French for my 11th grader and Spanish for my 9th grader, Science for my 5th grader).
My children have daily task lists on syllabird that they mostly complete. We’ll keep figuring things out, but I feel good about where we are.
October 2022 Monthly Goals
Here are my October Goals:
- Finish settling into this house. Focus: purpose and persist.
- Fine tune and maintain our homeschool schedule. Focus: habit and build and encourage.
- Explore Oxford (any recommendations? Focus: build.
- Blog! I’m a little behind because our previous two places had terrible internet. But this place has good internet, and we are all relieved. Focus: work.
I’m going to stop there, because that seems like enough for now.
What’s with the words in italics? Heal is my word of the year for 2022, but I’m using the six words the word of the year generator gave me before “heal” as focus words (habit, persist, purpose, work, encourage, build).

I’m sorry you pulled a muscle. Make sure you take lots of time to rest (I’m sure you are).
They really were watching history. It’s kind of strange to think of that era ending. I wonder if in the future we’ll talk about the second Elizabethan era.
