My daughter Emma is a real bookworm. She loves reading SO much that I often have to tell her to stop reading. She loves reading new middle grade fiction that publishers send us. She only writes reviews of her favorites. Here are her top three recent picks.
New Middle Grade Fiction Recommended by My Ten-Year-Old
I read the book School Ship Tobermory by Alexander McCall Smith. It was about two kids who lived on a sumbarine but then they went to the school ship Tobermory. The kids have lots of adventures on the ship. I think that it is cool that they go to a ship for school.
My note: Alexander McCall Smith is best known for his adult fiction series, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. He has also written a series of children’s books about Precious Ramotswe – the protagonist of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.
I read the book The Secrets To Ruling School: Class Election by Neil Swab. I found that this book is very funny, and a real page turner. This book is about helping you win the class election, and this book has many tips for you to help you win.
My note: I asked Emma if she thought that the tips in this book would help you win a class election. She says yes.
Emma also has a list of books she read in school this fall that she plans to review for me over break, so watch for that post soon.
Do You Know of a Book Emma Should Read?

What are your kids reading? Do you have a middle grade fiction book recommendation that you think Emma would enjoy? Please let me know! She likes realistic fiction about smart, proactive kids. A touch of fantasy is fine – the Harry Potter series is her all-time favorite read.

Has Emma read any of the Rick Riordan series? Based on ancient myths re-told in modern day settings. My 11 y.o. tears through them!
I’m finally emerging from the haze of Christmas and my post-Christmas trip to comment on everyone! YEA!
These books look great, I’m currently befuddled by allergies, so I’ll have to think of some good book recommendations.
And I frequently had to be told to put away my books.
I really loved

is sad but uplifting like

The Inquisitor’s Tale
Ms. Bixby’s Last Day
Wonder
Full of Beans
Turtle in Paradise
Thanks for these recommendations! We’ll search out copies.
That’s so great that she loves to read! I had no idea Alexander McCall Smith had a children’s series! I love No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency! My Emma got the first book in a series for Christmas called The White Giraffe. I haven’t read it yet, but the story is set in South Africa and sounds quite interesting!
I’ve heard good things about the Wingfeather Saga for middle-grade readers.
We haven’t heard of that series – thanks for the recommendation! We will look for the books.
My daughter loves the Thea Stilton books. They are easy reads, but the stories are clean and fun.
My son is a huge fan of Geronimo Stilton books.
Great advice, Emma. My 10 year old is interested in the last book on this list!
Emma really enjoyed that one, and I would love to hear what Smarty thinks of it.
