Line drying laundry

playing under the clothesline

Line drying laundry is one of my September goals. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and then I won this cool drying line from a giveaway at Katie’s Nesting Spot and that sealed the deal. We’ve line-dried most of our laundry so far, and I’m really glad we’re doing it! Hanging up laundry is something I can do while the kids play outside, and I’ve discovered that it inspires me to spend more time looking at the gorgeous sky overhead!

I had fantastic memories of playing under my mom’s laundry lines, and my kids love to sit in the “laundry shade”. They are also learning more about how dirty clothes get clean, and they always enjoy finding their favorite outfits on the drying line!

  1. I wish that I had the patience to do that. I have such visions of what fun that would be when in reality I think I would get tired of it and the kids would just pull it all down!

  2. I used to love running under the clothes line as a kid. I would love to line dry my clothes but my husband does not like it at all.

I noticed on your profile that you live in MA. We do too.

  3. @Debbie – don’t line-dried clothes smell amazing? =)

@Elisa – That’s so cool that Australia has a clothesline stamp!

@Jen – I think my neighbors might take issue if I set up the clothesline in the front yard =)

@Elise – I think your baby shoe idea could work – I definitely have some research to do!

@Susana – Thanks, you are so sweet! =)

@Natalie – Clothes stay pretty clean up on the line, but it does depend on the climate, and neighborhood!

  4. That reminds me of living in Africa! I really don’t mind line drying but here we don’t have a backyard so I haven’t done it. I don’t people to see my personal items in the front yard!

  5. We love line drying our laundry! Here in Perth it dries so quickly. I think the record was during an especially hot day last summer and my entire whites load was dry and hot to the touch in 20 minutes! We’ve lived in this house nearly a year now – my first place ever to be able to line dry laundry since I got married – and I’ve pressed the “start” button on my dryer maybe 20 to 30 times total.

We bought some Australian postage stamps that proudly boast the Australian inventor of a certain type of clothes line. Line drying is also a legitimate conversation starter around here – “did you get your laundry in before it started raining?” “wish I had gotten mine on the line early – probably take them all night to dry now!” and things like that.

And yes, my kids also love finding their favourite clothes on the line. Much excitement when we take certain items down upon drying. :)

  6. I spend way too much time hanging out laundry on our line – although it’s a good way to soak up a little vitamin D!!

The baby shoes you made in your previous post are amazing. I have some slipper like shoes that I bought at some markets which have a rubber sole. I am wondering if you can find some adult shoes like this and then cut them down to Lily’s size. I know nothing about making shoes, so this may be a completely ignorant idea to even suggest, it’s just what popped in to my mind when I read your post.

  7. Mary Anne, you are awesome for doing this! I bet your kids are loving it. I remember playing under my grandma’s clothes line when I was a kid.

  8. I keep thinking that it would be good to do, but then I start thinking of the wind, the dust, the neighborhood cats… and I chicken out. Good for you that you already made good on your September goal!
