Handmade Memories

Emma, Lily, and Johnny with dolls made by their great-grandmother

Mike’s aunt was kind enough to box up and mail me some of his Grandma’s sewing supplies, and she included these three dolls Grandma had made. Our kids LOVE the dolls, and Mike and I love the connection they give our children to the great-grandmother they would have loved to know well.

  1. I have two of those dolls from my grandma too! They sadly don’t have stripey legs, and I had to re-sew a bunch of the seams when I unpacked them, but it was so worth it! Let me know if you ever come across the pattern for those clothes, ours lost their bloomers and one of their dresses. Interestingly when a friend was divesting all her old doll clothes I found another Raggedy Ann ‘dress’ that exactly matched the pattern of the one we have, it makes me feel like everyone’s grandmothers must have made these! (And so now we have two dresses.) I thought I had an apron for one of them too, but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. :-(

  2. OH, I sure remember Raggedy Ann! Wow, this brings back memories for me! I’ll have to ask my mom where mine is. I have so many old stuffed animals and dolls like that. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  3. This picture brings to mind the Raggedy Ann doll my mom made me when I was little. I’ve got to go look for it at her house.

  4. How sweet that you have a doll for each of them. The first thing my dad bought for my twin sister and I when we were born was a pair of little Raggedy Ann dolls. (not handmade, but still sweet!)

  5. What a precious memory! These dolls are really pretty too. Lily seems to be particularly pleased with ehrs.

How wonderful! I’m sure their great-grandmother is looking on, delighted to see those three dolls so well-loved. :)

  7. You almost brought me to tears. I’m holding them back. My Mother-in-law also made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for all the kids in the family (extended family too) – she made my son George’s before he was born… and then passed away before he was born. He received his doll from his grandpa on Christmas and it was a touching moment. I am so glad that she made the doll so early on.

I understand all too well where you are coming from.
    Jamie
