You know those paper link chains you made to go on the Christmas tree as a kid? Swap the red and green paper for orange and blank, and you’ve got the perfect Halloween countdown chain!

Emma and Johnny with their Halloween countdown

We started this tradition way back in 2010. Emma and Johnny (4 and 2 years old at the time) were really excited about Halloween that year.

They made the Halloween countdown chain you see here, complete with fancy edging on the black links. The idea is that they remove on link per day to help them count down the days, but so far they have refused to remove a single link. I’m thinking maybe we should start punching holes in the links instead!

Halloween Countdown Activities

You can also write an activity on the links that they can complete each day while they wait! Here are a few ideas to get started:

  1. Aww, we always did that for Christmas. It was a tradition on the day after Thanksgiving my brother and sister and I would sit and color on strips of paper and make a chain. I loved to take the links off though, maybe they’ll like it better as they get older?

    1. @Elisabeth – I love the idea of using stickers – and Emma and Johnny will take ANY opportunity to play with stickers! Thanks for the suggestion!

And yes, Emma wore long sleeves for one very brief moment… She’s back to her usual minimalist dress, now!

  2. We usually countdown to Christmas but haven’t done it for Halloween. I think we might though because I’m sure my kids will love it and it cuts down on the “How many days?” questions!!

That is such a cute picture!

  5. that’s really funny. Our haunted castle was originally supposed to be a halloween advent calendar, but that didn’t work out either. You could have them color on the links or glitter glue them or something as the days go by…
