I let my kids start playing with them once they stop putting things in their mouth (I still supervise, of course, because of the small pieces). Johnny is 20 months old, and he loves playing with them. He can do simple templates and he enjoys building simple designs and towers with them too.

You can buy larger foam sets that I imagine would work for any age group; we just don't have them…
