Good on you! We've done a lot of California to the UK long hauls over the last five years with the kids, plus a visa dash to Calgary in -35degreesC, and it really does get easier as they get older. The last flight we did in May 09 was the best yet, with the kids being three and four years old. I've found that all the European airlines knock the socks off the US ones too. BMI gave us tonnes of cool stuff for the kids to play with and special kid's meals, and yep, United has nowhere to change a diaper, even on a 5 hour flight. My breaking point came when United told me that we couldn't take milk on board and that they only had a pint of milk for first class passengers to have in thier coffee, but we could have some powdered coffee creamer for my 18 month old if we'd like! It was probably a good thing that you left the carseats, because I've had trouble in the past with Euro airlines not accepting the use of US approved carseats. Hopefully in the future the airlines will become more kid freindly and realise that allowing a baby to keep their gel teether is no more of a big deal than letting a first class passenger wear her fancy gel filled push up bra. I'm ranting sorry. I'm just very pleased to hear that you are travelling with the kids and planning to do more of it. My two always have developmental bursts after such an intense period of experiencing new things.

The defensive mom in me begins to come out just reading the comment about how people with young kids should drive not fly. GRRRRR. Okay, I'm over it. :) I'm glad your trip went fairly smoothly. I just flew alone with my 3 last week, but I'm so glad my parents now live within my same time zone. It definitely makes the transition smoother!

I am so glad that you all arrived safe and as sound as humanly possible ;) It's awesome that your kids took to grandparents right away, so you could get a break. The worst time of our travel was arrival to Germany when Mouse would cling to me for dear life for days. And, yes, we also had the crankiest time on the way back home. Good luck in settling back!

What an amazing story! Truly, you are an inspiration to us all! Well done! I've never heard of Fly Niki either, but after reading your story I am so jealous and wish they flew in the US.
