Favorite Reads: Something for everyone

Machines Go To Work
Johnny loves the illustrations of trucks, boats, trains, and helicopters in Machines Go To Work by William Low. The fold-out pages make for neat scenes, but have to be folded carefully back into the book. I really like the part at the back of the book that describes parts of the various machines and how the machines are used.

The Cow Who Clucked
The kids and I enjoyed the whimsical illustrations of The Cow Who Clucked by Denise Fleming. The story of a cow searching for her moo is cute, and kids can see that her journey would have been easier if she had paid attention to three very small yet vitally important clues.

Little Donkey and the Birthday Present
Emma’s favorite library book was Little Donkey and the Birthday Present, written by Rindert Kromhout and illustrated by Annemarie van Haeringen. She definitely identifies with Little Donkey’s desire to keep the birthday present he purchased for his friend to himself, and I appreciate the gentle way in which the mother donkey deals with the problem.

My Mother Is Mine
All three children enjoyed My Mother is Mine, written by Marion Dane Bauer and Peter Elwell, but I especially enjoyed reading it with Lily. The pictures and length of the text were both perfect for a seven-month-old, and it was great to have a library book she enjoyed from cover to cover. The different mother-baby animal pairs keep the book interesting for older children, and the softness of the illustrations, reassuring message of the story, and flow of the text make this a perfect bedtime story.

The Racecar Alphabet
Brian Floca’s The Racecar Alphabet was my favorite book to read to Emma and Johnny together. Johnny LOVED the racecar illustrations, and Emma was enthralled with the onomatopoeias throughout the text. I was impressed with the way Floca worked all of the letters of the alphabet into a storyline – with the letters in order, too!

I’m linking this post up to Mouse Grows, Mouse Learns where you can find all sorts of wonderful books that other children are reading!
