I grabbed LMNO Peas off the library bookshelf because Johnny loves any alphabet-related book. This pick was a HUGE hit – especially with Johnny, but with the girls as well. The illustrations of the peas taking on different careers for each letter of the alphabet are darling, and I don’t know if I will ever look at the peas on my plate the same way again.

We received a review copy of Star of the Sea: A Day in the Life of a Starfish from the publisher this week. Emma loves animals, and she loves non-fiction, so this was the book for her. The book is a very factual telling of a day in the life of a starfish. It was a little too realistic for Johnny’s tastes (the starfish loses a ray), but Emma loves it, and Lily enjoys looking at the illustrations.

I picked up No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) after a friend asked me if I could recommend any books about safety. I do recommend this book for fire safety – it discusses how to leave a house that is on fire (thanks to the dragon, in this case), and the little girl goes straight to a pre-determined meeting place to wait for her mom. The story is also written very charmingly in rhyme, and the pictures are fun. Johnny was hugely upset that the teddy bear had to be left behind, especially since he was saying that he was the teddy bear.

Mike is so allergic to animals that we aren’t likely to ever get a dog, but even the picture on the cover of A Puppy for Annie has me wishing for one! This story has the undeniable charm of a true tale – it’s based on the author-illustrator’s experience with her daughter and their new puppy.

MaryAnne is a craft loving educator, musician, photographer, and writer who lives in Silicon Valley with her husband Mike and their four children.

  1. Thanks for sharing these book suggestions! I just requested a few of them from the library! A few of our favs are Big pumpkin by Erica Silverman and Have you filled a bucket? by Carol McCloud =)

  2. Love LMNO Peas– and everything Keith Baker! I’ll have to check out No Dragons for Tea. My boys love playing dragons and fire fighters after they saw a similar scenario on a Elmo fire safety video.

  3. Your selection of books would also be enjoyed at our house. I think Savvy would really enjoy the starfish book as she seems to enjoy telling stories from the point of view of an animal. Blakie would be captivated by the puppy book – anything to do with dogs and it is an instant favourite for him. As Savvy is learning to write the alphabet at the moment I am going to see if I can get a copy of the alphabet book.

I’m with you when it comes to sensory play and sick children. We have done more than our fair share of shaving cream, soapy water etc etc over the last few days!!! It works a treat.

  4. All these books look adorable, we only read the first one. I think I am going to get No Dragons for Tea – what a cute title for a fire safety book! Thanks for joining WMCIR!

  5. Great books! The dragon one sounds good. Poor Johnny is so sensitive, that is how my nephew Matthew is. He’d be upset about those things too.

  6. Definitely checking out Star of the Sea for Ella!

You also won the giveaway on my blog! I will email you shortly!

    Thanks so much!

    Kerri
