Emma style reading lessons

Emma writes

Johnny recently developed an obsession with the LeapFrog Talking Words Factory DVD. He helps clean the house in exchange for watching it. The last three times they watched it, Emma started bringing along a sheet of paper. By day three she managed to copy down nearly every word from the show (she asked me to spell out a few extras afterwards). The cool thing is, she can now read and write most of these words all by herself – sounding out the short ones and memorizing the longer ones. I think it’s a combination of her watching the show and the few lessons we completed from Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I’m not in a rush for her to learn to read, but this is evidence that if she’s ready to learn sooner than she “needs” to (from an academic point of view) she will learn on her own!

Children are natural learners! They want to learn! What a great environment you’ve provided to let her explore and learn!

Love this! What a terrific glimpse into the words that are important to her right now. :) Her handwriting is fabulous – so even. It’s great that Johnny enjoys the learning DVD, too. Learning IS fun!!

  5. Emma has an excellent handwriting, and I think she will be a great speller. I think there is a great advantage in learning to read and write at the same time. And what’s neat – she is also learning how to teach – lucky siblings!
