Cinnamon Apple Peels

how to make cinnamon apple peels

I had heard of cinnamon apple peels, so when we had apple peels left over from making applesauce, I googled it and found a recipe by Martha Stewart. I used her recipe for inspiration, but we changed it a lot – here’s what we did:

  • Mix equal parts cinnamon and sugar in a bowl
  • Add apple peels and toss (we used a covered bowl, and my kids LOVED this part!) You may need to add a little water if your peels are on the dry side.
  • Lay apple peels out on a baking tray with a sheet of parchment paper
  • Bake at 250 degrees for 40 minutes
  • Enjoy!

Cinnamon apple peels treat for kids.

Here the kids are helping (well, mostly watching) Mike lay out the apple peels. They are raising their hands because I asked them who likes cooking with Dad. :)

The sticks rolled up while baking. We used a variety of apples in our applesauce, and while the green Granny Smith apple peels merely curled up, the red apples (Gala apples, I believe) bubbled into a chewy candied apple mixture. I think that set may have had a little extra water added, which probably make more sugar stick to the apples? We also shook them up second, so more of the cinnamon (which is less dense than the raw sugar we used) stuck to the first batch, and more sugar to the second batch. I see a future science experiment…

Have you ever tried baking apple peels?

  1. These look great, I love cinnamon and apple together it’s so warming and is THE taste of autumn for me! Thankyou for sharing with me on #kidsinthekitchen it’s great to have you joining in!

  2. Are they supposed to be crispy or chewy in the end? I would like to make this with my class – would you recommend the red over the green apples or how about yellow apple peel? Also, do you think it needs the sugar to work well – or would just cinnamon on the apples be sweet enough? Sorry for all the questions:)

    1. I think cinnamon alone can work, but I would just sprinkle it on instead of shaking the peels with it! The green apples go more crisp, and the red ones go more chewing – especially if you mix a bit of water in with the cinnamon sugar. I hope you do get to do this with your class!

  3. I have tried baking apple peels and have never had any luck. The texture never turns out right but I have always questioned the recipes that I used since some step always seemed like it was missing. I will print this out and give your recipe a try, thanks!

  4. I haven’t ever baked apple peels, I may try it without any sugar, since apparently I can’t eat it anymore without getting a hangover the next day. I guess I used to be permanently hung over! But cinnamon and apples sounds lovely!

Nice! Very tempted to try this next time we make and apple sharlotka with green apples, since you had better success with the green peels :)

  6. I have never thoughts of baking apple peels. What a great way to use them up after making applesauce! Definitely going to try this.

    1. They are delicious! I think they would be pretty good with just cinnamon sprinkled on top and no sugar, too, if you want a healthier version :)
