Fall is in the air, and to celebrate I’m showcasing some of my favorite autumn leaves learning activities for kids. These activities are perfect companions to the book Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert, which happens to be this week’s Virtual Book Club for Kids book.
Autumn Leaf Crayon Rubbings

It’s easy to make leaf prints! All you need are:
Sometimes when you have several children you forget to introduce the younger kids to activities your older children adored at their age. Making crayon leaf rubbings was the subject of one of my very first blog posts, but five-year-old Anna didn’t even know this activity existed! We fixed that this weekend, and I’m happy to say she is now a big fan!
The older kids joined in as well. It was fun to see how different kids took different approaches to the activity. All three of my girls picked a single color and stuck with it, but they used the leaves differently. Eight-year-old Lily created a pretty border. Eleven-year-old Emma put the leaves all over the paper, and then used that paper as stationary to write a snail mail letter to a friend.
Nine-year-old Johnny wasn’t initially sure that crayon rubbing was cool enough for him. He watched the girls make a few pictures and decided to join.
He was the only one of my kids to use more than one color, and his finished picture is my personal favorite. You’re never too old or cool for crayon leaf rubbings!

Fall is my favorite time of year, and I can’t wait to try these other autumn leaves themed learning activities for kids! I’ll try them primarily with five-year-old Anna, but I suspect the other kids will join in sometimes – just as they did with our crayon leaf rubbing activity!
