The Biodome was a highlight for all of us from our time in Montreal! Featuring five different ecosystems (Tropical Rainforest, Laurentian Maple Forest, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Labrador Coast, and Sub-Antarctic Islands), it is an amazing journey through different parts of the world and the animals that inhabit it, all encased within a giant dome.
We were welcomed by this gorgeously orange Tamarin monkey, and continued through the dome to discover all sorts of creatures! Here are a few of our favorites!
These blue parrots were very fun to watch! They didn’t pay any attention to us, but were definitely interested in each other!
The river otters held our attention the longest. I’ve heard that otters are playful, and these two definitely lived up to that reputation! They made the most hyper toddler seem low-key, swimming, climbing, rolling in the dirt, swimming some more, wrestling…
I loved that there was a slide for kids next to the otter exhibit, so they could play too!
This lumpfish was one of many unusual animalss we saw in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, as were these diving birds:
They dove clear to the bottom of the tank!
Emma and Johnny were stunned by the size of this lobster claw. Emma touched it, but Johnny wasn’t convinced it wouldn’t start snapping at him.
I’ve wondered idly what a Sturgeon looked like ever since I read Beware the Fish! by Montreal-born author Gordon Korman when I was 12 or 13 years old. Now I know! This guy was five or six feet long!
This puffin was extremely friendly! He would get closer,
And closer! Then he would try tapping his beak on the glass, trying to connect!
We met some curious penguins, too!
If you can’t visit the Biodome in person, their website is very cool! Perfect for the homeschooler/afterschooler!
Have you ever been to a Biodome? Do you know of an amazing zoo or botanical garden?

Love the Biodome (of course :)!
What an amazing place and how wonderful to be able to get so close to the creatures! The last picture is great too! :)
Those were awesome pictures!
I LOVED the Biodome!
This looks really great! We have not been to Montreal since Parker was a baby, so now I’m excited to plan another trip. This doesn’t compare to a biodome, but if you’re ever up this way, the Squam Lakes Science Center is really nice, a good combination of animals and nature.
Squam Lakes Science Center looks neat! Thanks for the tip =)
Otters always remind me of children too! :-)
Great pictures. I love the lobster claw picture. Your son definitely looks like he’s waiting for it to move, cute.
I visited Montreal in 1999, but I didn’t know about the Biodome then. Too bad – it looks amazing. I am glad you had so much educational fun!
That is really a neat place! What a great learning experience for the kids!
Those diving birds look so neat!
LOVE that last photo, and that orange monkey is amazing! Sounds like an incredible day out.
We visited a botanical garden near us this past weekend. We liked exploring all the different paths. It wasn’t as amazing as Kew or the Missouri Botanical Garden in St Louis, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
You have visited some great botanical gardens!
I love that last picture of them sitting in the “egg shells.” It looks like a great place to visit!
Wow! This place looks incredible through your photos! I’ve never been to a Biodome but it sounds amazing!
