Celebrating the 2023 Multicultural Children’s Book Day

What You'll Find on This Page

I’ve been co-hosting the Multicultural Children’s Book Day from the very beginning! I always enjoy discovering new books and resources through this annual event.

Multicultural Children's Book Day Through the Years

Here are my MCBD posts from other years. This is always an amazing celebration of diverse books for children.

Using This Event to Discover New Diverse Books

Part of the event is reviewing diverse books. This year I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of The Star Festival, written by Moni Ritchie Hadley and illustrated by Mizuho Fujisawa.

In this story, a young girl named Keiko goes to the Japanese Tanabata festival (also known as the Star festival) with her mother and grandmother. They lose Oba (grandma), and Keiko channels the mythology behind the festival in order to reunite with her beloved grandmother.

It’s a beautiful book – well written with fantastic illustrations. I didn’t know about the Star Festival before reading the book, and so I especially appreciated the way detailed descriptions of the celebrations were woven seamlessly into the story.

Learn More About Multicultural Children’s Book Day

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
