Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 (1/28/22) is in its 9th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

I’ve signed up to co-host this event for years, and I always enjoy discovering new books!

celebrating diversity in children's literature: highlighting the book I Have Cerebral Palsy by Mary Beth Springer

Every year that I co-host, I get a book to review as part of this event. This year, the book was I Have Cerebral Palsy, by Mary Beth Springer.

Mary Beth Springer did a great job of partnering with Sydney, who has cerebral palsy, to write this book. The book is full of wonderful photos, and I really appreciated the way the book spoke about Sydney’s particular journey with this disease while also explaining that cerebral palsy looks different in different people.

We see Sydney living life to the fullest. My favorite part of the book is this line:

I don’t laugh at people who are different from me. Differences are what make people interesting!
