Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books: Angela Dominguez

I really enjoyed interviewing children’s author-illustrator Angela Dominguez about writing and illustrating children’s books and her newest picture book, Let’s Go, Hugo! Angela had wonderful advice for anyone interested in writing or illustrating children’s books, including these three titles that she recommends (Amazon affiliate links for these books): The Encyclopedia of Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books, Illustrating Children’s Books: Creating Pictures for Publication, and Writing Children’s Books.

Angela has two more books coming out soon: Santiago Stays and Maria Had a Little Llama. My kids and I really enjoyed Let’s Go, Hugo!, and we are looking forward to these new books as well! Be sure to check out Angela Dominguez’s site! You can also find Angela on Twitter, Google Plus, and Facebook!

This interview was especially fun for me because all three of my kids are very into drawing and writing stories.

I have a friend who wrote a children’s book, and another friend who is a children’s illustrator! :) I admire them so much!

  4. I have a story that I would love to write for my girls in my head about how our family was formed but I just can’t seem to get it from my head onto paper. I might take a look at some of those books Angela recommends.

    1. That sounds like a great story! I don’t have any stories in my head at the moment, but I think I want to look at some of Angela’s books as well.

  5. Thanks for this Mama! So awesome!

I also wanted to make this hangout -specially cause I don’t know what a hangout is. Haha! Really, My son wants to write a book about Mario (from Mario brothers) so i am going to show him this video.

Thanks for the encouragement – and also for encouraging others to fulfill their dreams.

  6. I am also writing and illustrating my own children’s book. It’s called The Day the Monster Parade Came to Town! The book is about getting to know your neighbor, sharing, and being kind to others; this charming story also promotes healthy living and hygiene. The reader will follow the characters as they venture through the friendly, sleepy town of “Old Town”. The Monsters’ will parade around Main St. awakening the residents of this small community as they visit with one another through play, simple interactions and reward those who foster community service. Please take a look at some of the artwork. Thanks!

      1. Thank you, it’s something I’ve been working on for a while. It’s very time consuming, challenging and rewarding all at the same time. I mixed traditional drawings (pencil and paper) with technology (Adobe Illustrator and a Wacom tablet).

  7. I don’t aspire to write children’s books but I remember my mom writing one when I was little. It didn’t get published but it really is a fantastic book. Hmmm…maybe I should self-publish it for her and give it to her as a gift. Got my wheels thinking…

  8. Lila actually won a district wide writing contest a few years ago so I could totally see her going that route, she loves the creative process. My kids all like to draw but I am not sure if any of them are passionate about it, we’ll see.

    1. Angela Dominguez was such a joy to interview – very nice and she shared some great information for anyone interested in writing or illustrating children’s books!

  9. I <3 seeing your children's creative drawings. It's fun that you get to do things that are particular to your family's interests.

  10. I’m in the process of having a book that I wrote illustrated by some of my students. Its my first time doing something like this. I’ve really enjoyed coming up with the story thinking about the illustrations. Its a super hero story, but my super hero is an old woman.
