Watching the 2015 Supermoon Lunar Eclipse

Science for kids: lunar eclipse

We let the kids stay up past their bedtimes (very rare occurrence in our household) to see the Supermoon lunar eclipse. We joined a bunch of fellow nerds of all ages (an incredibly abundant species where we live; some we knew and more we didn’t know) on a nearby hill and admired a beautiful sunset. Such beautiful clouds, but tonight was not a night for beautiful clouds – particularly since our pour drought-ridden area STILL has no rain in the forecast!

Sadly, the moon was hiding behind those clouds. So we went home. Mike went out half an hour later, and didn’t see anything. About fifteen minutes after that, I wandered right outside our little condo…

I called Mike, and we pulled nine-year-old Emma out of bed (she had been very disappointed to not see it earlier). We decided to leave the three other kids sleeping.

I didn’t manage to get a particularly good picture because my brain wasn’t thinking about things like camera tripods. I did, however, capture this stunning photo of the very end of the eclipse – see the shadow at the top right?

This wonderful photo makes me wish I had set myself up with a tripod and captured the entire thing on film. Or, maybe not, because plenty of other people did that and I enjoyed it just sitting and watching. Moments like this make me realize just how beautiful the universe is.

Did you catch any of the 2015 Supermoon lunar eclipse?

  1. Beautiful photos! I took Parker to a bridge over a river to see the moon rise. It looked spectacular, but I wasn’t anticipating the height of the railing, so by the time I jacked my tripod up high enough, it was too high for me to see what I was shooting! So, no good pictures, but a fun memory :)

We are happy that we were able to catch the end of it, Leave it to Mother Nature to arrange cloudy skies this one day in the past few. The sunset was amazing though!

I definitely let mine stay up a bit later last night to watch at least the part with the moon starting to disappear.
    The were mesmerized!
Once they were asleep I went out to see if I could see the red moon, but by then we had too many clouds.
You have great pics, by the way!

  4. We had a similar experience in Southern California. We went to a great spot to watch the full eclipse and set up the telescope, but it was mostly cloudy and even when the clouds parted briefly, it wasn’t that impressive. Then we went home and once the light started shining through again, that was impressive. I started texting my friends between 8:30 and 9 telling them they should go wake up their kids.

  5. You had a few more people gathered on your hill than we had in our park – guess there are more nerds in California than Montana – or maybe there are just more people there in general :) Great shot!

  6. Wonderful photo! So glad you and Emma got to see it. I think getting one great photo and enjoying the moment was the perfect balance!
