Super-Simple Superhero Capes

Superhero capes have been on my “to-make” list for ages, and since one of my goals for July was to make dress-up clothes for Johnny, I figured it was time to give it a go. Of course, it’s more fun to be a superhero if you have fellow superheroes to hang out with, so all three kids got capes.

How to Make a Super Simple Superhero Cape

I had each kid lie on their selected color of felt, and I cut out a cape shape, going up over the head. No pictures because I knew keeping the kids STILL on the felt was a very time-sensitive endeavor! The section that went over their head was then cut out to make a head hole. The finished piece of felt looked a lot like this, with slightly less squiggly lines:

We attached velcro to keep the cape on. You could also use a button, although I like the fact that velcro WILL come undone if another child starts yanking on any given superheroes cape.

Then initials for each child were cut out of a second color of felt (all colors were chosen by the kids, if you didn’t guess already!) and hand-stitched on.

Emma stitched her own letter on (see above). I stitched on Johnny’s and Lily’s. Lily immediately demanded that her letter be removed. So she has a letter-less cape, which she typically chooses not to use. Maybe someday, but in the meantime we have two very active superheroes in our home!

You can hot glue these letters on if you don’t want to sew at all!

  1. Great! They seem to really love it! Must copy this idea but my children have never been confronted wit the world of superheros! :) Perhaps they would feel they are like “Winnie the Witch” (do you know those books – you must check them out!). Quinn got “Winnie’s Amazing Pumpkin” last year (incl.CD) and the kids love it.

    1. My kids don’t know much about them, beyond the fact that they wear capes.

We will have to look for the “Winnie the Witch” books!

Great! My favorite is when the kiddos put the cap and batman mask on our stray dog Shadow. Too cute.

  3. Perfect!!!

We have three very active supers around here, too, except their mommy hasn’t had the time to make capes. They use their blankies!

They want to be superheroes for halloween (as of now; could change in the next 10 minutes!) so I need to remember this one!

  4. I have putting off making capes for my girls because I didn’t feel up to taking on a sewing project. I love this easy cape. Great idea! Thanks.

  5. Those are great! We’ve been tying old receiving blankets around Ingrid’s shoulders to make a cape and I’ve been meaning to make a real one. I’ll have to try this, we have all the materials!
