Story Time

Emma reads a bedtime story to Johnny and Lily

I am amazed at how much having a reading child has changed my life! Emma reads most picture books aloud fluidly and expressively, and I love to see her read to her younger brother and sister! Here she is reading them a bedtime story while Mike (who usually reads to them at bedtime) is out of town. She is always willing to read to her younger brother and sister, and I love to see them learning together.

  1. Love the picture and Mike’s first comment. I wonder what book about the Black Holes he was reading to the kids.

    1. “Black Holes” by Katie Parker. It’s part of the “Big Ideas in Science” series. It’s got a LOT of text, so he must have been simplifying as he read.

That’s so wonderful that she is reading to her brother and sister! And an adorable photo too! Reading is such a chore for my oldest. Though she loves to read to her sister when it’s way past her bedtimes, just so she can stay up a little later. :)

  3. I love it when my kids work together on anything, but especially on schoolwork. It helps the teacher and the student… and it builds love and happiness in my home.

  4. That is such a beautiful picture (on so many levels).

What a fantastic big sister Emma is – she has her younger siblings captivated. Precious.

  5. I love it!! Kaia has been such a reluctant reader and this is one of the biggest reasons I want her to take off with reading – I’ve long dreamed of her being able to read to her siblings!

  6. That is such a sweet picture! Superman is the one in my family who really reads with expression. He’s not really fluent yet with picture books, but he has such character.

  7. It is so fun to see the young ones start to read!
Luke was reading and now he stopped…I didn’t think that was possible! I thought it was like riding a bike. I know he can still do it…but I think he is not interested! :( He reads…just not the same….strange!

It’s so adorable to see her reading to her siblings!

  8. I love that picture! Emma is a really good big sister. Last night for story time I read a book about black holes to Johnny and Emma. They were absolutely fascinated with them. Emma asked what would happen if she held onto a rope when going near a black hole. Johnny said he didn’t want to go near a black hole because he didn’t want to die. They found the illustrations of how massive objects distort space-time very interesting. They wouldn’t let me turn that page until I (attempted) to explain it to them. They liked the idea of micro black holes—somehow they were less scary to Johnny—but I had to disappoint them with the fact that they won’t last very long, even if we were able to create them in the Large Hadron Collider.
