Story Cubes

playing with story cubes

I’ve had story cubes on my to-make list for ages, so when Maggy of Red Ted Art offered a PDF of ideas, I sent her an email right away! I skipped the recommended varnish-the-blocks-first step, and my sharpie pens did bleed into the grain slightly; thankfully my kids don’t mind. They tell stories about individual block faces, use them as tiny characters, and build towers so far. I see years of play ahead of us!

Thank you, Maggy, for making this project less intimidating with your lovely PDF file!

  1. Hi MaryAnne,
I would like to do it for my daughter, please could you send me your pdf?

    I love your blog!

  2. Oh, this is a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for posting the idea and the link for it too. It would be neat to have them draw a picture too of the story they make up. Oooh, and an older child could even write their story–great spelling and handwriting practice. OK, I’ll stop now:-). I am going to make a set of these for Joe for sure! Thanks Mary Anne!

  3. These are such an amazing idea! My son is a little over two and a half and would love these. I also own a preschool and these would be great for the two’s, three’s and four’s who all adore storytelling. Thanks for passing the idea along and including the link!

  4. How fun! My kids like my silly stories, but I have been low on inspiration for new ones. If only I knew how to draw…

  5. I tried this with M&D blocks that we have but somehow Anna had no interest in this kind of story telling, so I sort of put the idea of making my own to rest. I am glad it works for you.

    1. @Natalie – I make up stories, but they don’t use them that way. They like my stories (the sillier the better), but on their own they just use them as regular blocks or sometimes make the drawings on some sides into characters.

  6. love love love
I’m doing a mainly homemade Christmas, I think I’ll make some of these to go along with all the other wonderful goodies I’ve got brewing = ) Would modpodge work or should it be a wood varnish?

    1. @Michelle – I’m sure she’d love them!

@Ticia – I bet you could make some great ones, because you actually know how to draw! =)

@Jen – They are a lot of fun. I like to dump them out and make up a story with whatever comes up, the sillier the better. The kids think it’s hilarious!

@Quadmama – Don’t tell the kids, but I just took some wooden cubes out of their blocks set. They don’t play with the cubes much anyhow, so they haven’t noticed – and maybe they never will! But you can buy bags of wooden cubes at craft stores, if you don’t have a block set that you can (or want) to use. =)
