The Revolutionary Paul Revere

Living near Boston, I thought it would be good to learn a little more about Paul Revere, and Joel J. Miller’s The Revolutionary Paul Revere did not disappoint. The book is well-researched, and while the writing style is somewhat dry it is easy to read and paints a clear picture of Revere and the society he lived in. I came away with a better understanding of the revolutionary colonies, and I will never again see Revere solely as Longfellow’s midnight rider. I knew that Paul Revere was a talented silversmith, but (among other things) learned that he also made bells and supplied the sheets of copper for Robert Fulton’s experimental steam engines. Miller’s discussions of Revere as a businessman and entrepreneur and his place within the social classes of the time were both interesting and enlightening.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about revolutionary America as well as Paul Revere. Conveniently, I have a copy of this book (provided by phenix & phenix, as was my review copy) to give away to a reader of this blog. To enter, leave a comment telling me a favorite historical fact from the American revolution. Leave comments for extra entries if you follow this blog, or subscribe via email. A winner will be chosen via random.org sometime after 9am EDT July 5th.

  1. Ah, I have to enter this one! How could I pass up a history book?!
Favorite fact…the war might have been lost if George Washington hadn’t decided to have his troops inoculated against smallpox :-)

  2. Nearly 10,000 pounds, as in the money, not the weight, of tea were dropped in the harbor during the “Boston Tea Party.” No, I’m not as smart as I seem. I had to look on Wikipedia for a fun fact because History was not one of my favorite subjects in school… although now I wish it had been because as I’m older I learn more and more fun things.
