Outdoors at last!

Happy Lily

It has finally warmed up enough here to spend long-ish periods of time outdoors (still bundled up, but without freezing noses). We went treasure-hunting on our street, and came home with rocks, which Emma put in her pockets and Johnny stuck in his pants cuffs – after first filling all his pockets:

He walked pretty slowly on the way home! We then set up a rock washing station. Emma and Johnny delighted in the enhanced beauty of even the plainest rock when placed in water:

And I enjoyed the pure joy children find so easily in the simplest activities.

  1. I too love the “rocks in the cuffs” idea/photos. So cute!!!

But the whole thing reminded me of a beautiful rock I found on the playground when I was in Kindergarten, a beautiful LARGE rock, which I tucked into my jacket pocket because it was so beautiful. But alas, after recess, when my classmates got into a “jacket fight” as we were supposed to be hanging them up, I started whipping my jacket about too, forgetting about that beautiful fist-sized rock in my pocket. Not my best moment. : )

(But thankfully, no one was seriously harmed…)

  2. These are cute pictures. The warmer weather here has been great too. We’ve been outside every day since Friday and it’s been fun. Spring is going to be much welcomed by all of us!

Hanna and Joe like to wash rocks too. It’s interesting what makes them happy and keeps them occupied sometimes.

  5. What a beautiful smile Lily has! I remember the joys of washing rocks as a child. I also remember at some point having some rock polish stuff that made the rocks stay shiny and wet-looking.

  6. The rocks in the pants cuffs and pockets is SO sweet! I love how children have fun with such simple things and enjoy the outdoors in a way most grown ups never think of. Washing the rocks was a great idea; they really do look nice when they are in water! Here’s to more sunshine for all of us!!

  7. Yay for warmer weather! It’s true – washing activities are always a hit here too. Hopefully with better weather comes better health for everyone in your family!

Yea! Lily looks gorgeous in fuschia, and the image of Johnny trudging manfully under the weight of so many treasured stones is too sweet.
