I am a huge fan of baby wearing, and my sewing tutorial for a baby doll carrier is one of the more popular posts on this site. So when a friend (Rachel of Choosing Home) helped me come up with this no-sew doll carrier design, I knew I needed to share it with my readers! I have wanted to make my kids ERGO style baby doll carriers for years. I didn’t, because I couldn’t come up with a clean design that was inexpensive to make and that my kids could put on and take off themselves. This carrier has finally solved that problem!

You Won’t Believe How Easy It is To Make This No-Sew Doll Carrier

Inspire hours of pretend play with this adorable no-sew doll carrier. Easy and inexpensive to make!

This no-sew doll carrier is unbelievably easy to make! You only need a few materials, and none of them are expensive. The instructions are so simple that my tween is able to put together the carriers on her own. I do help with the cutting, because felt can be a pain to cut. We made four of these last night in under an hour, in two different sizes. You can do this, even if you are a crafting newbie!

Materials

  • Felt. While I adore wool felt, I used polyester felt (this brand is nice and soft) for this project. You need at least one color; two if you want to add a pocket or decorative design on the back.
  • 1.5 inch wide elastic. This black elastic worked well for us. You need 40 inches for the larger size, or 36 inches for the smaller size of doll carrier.
  • Glue gun and hot glue sticks

How to Make a No-Sew Doll Carrier

Your kids will adore this no-sew doll carrier - and you will love how easy it is to make!

First, you need to cut out your pieces.

We made two sizes of doll carriers, one that fits my 7-year-old and 10-year-old and one that fits my 4-year-old and her 2-year-old cousin.

Pieces for the larger carrier:

  • One piece of felt, 10.5 inches tall and 10 inches wide.
  • Two 15″ lengths of elastic for the shoulder straps.
  • One 10″ wide length of elastic to hold the doll in place.
  • [Optional] one smaller piece of felt to cut out a decoration or pocket for the back of the carrier.

Pieces for the smaller carrier:

  • One piece of felt, 10 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide.
  • Two 13″ lengths of elastic for the shoulder straps
  • One 9.5″ wide length of elastic to hold the doll in place.
  • [Optional] one smaller piece of felt to cut out a decoration or pocket for the back of the carrier.

Assembling the Doll Carrier

If you are adding a pocket or decoration to the back of the carrier, do this first! Cut your decoration out, and then add hot glue around the edges. 7-year-old Lily’s backpack has a butterfly on the back, while 4-year-old Anna’s carrier has the cat you see 10-year-old Emma adding above. We have added pockets and flowers to other carriers. You can also be super fancy and add feltie stickers.

Next, glue the shortest length of elastic across the middle of the back. This is the strap to hold your doll in place on your back. You simply hot glue the ends of the elastic to the felt.

Next, add the shoulder straps. You fold the edges of these straps over before gluing them down so that it shapes nicely to your shoulders. Still pretty easy, but requires a little bit more thought. This is also why these straps are quite long – so you can fold over at least 1.5 inches and still have enough elastic.

When you are done, the back of the carrier looks like an H. Slip your baby doll through the center strap, and slip the shoulder straps on. You can use this as a front carrier or a back carrier!

  1. I have about 5 glue guns, of which I think only 1 or 2 work….. I’m inclined to try this by sewing, but that’s more because I have bad luck with glue guns. That, and it feels faster to me.
