Learning to Write

20090824_0811I don’t send Emma to preschool, but I’m hesitant to say I homeschool her, because I don’t have defined learning objectives or a curriculum I use. Emma loves to play school, though, and she often requests specific things she wants to do for school. She’s been interested in writing lately, so yesterday I found some fun handwriting readiness worksheets. Emma LOVED doing these worksheets, and she was not stressed about her inability to draw perfectly straight lines the way she has been when doing alphabet-based worksheets. She also wrote her name for the first time yesterday and was so pleased with herself that she wrote it again about twenty times – with varying numbers of horizontal lines for the “E” each time!

It's awesome that Emma wants to play school and learn. That's the best way to learn – naturally through their own curiousity. She did a great job on her name!

  2. Got to love these self-directed little ones who just beg us to let them learn. I feel challenged to keep up with my toddler – but in a good way.

E is the best first initial – so fun in all its forms!

  3. I'm so glad I found those pre-writing readiness worksheets I mentioned on my blog. Ben just wasn't ready for the alphabet yet, but he's doing great with it now.

I'm glad Emma's having a such a wonderful time with it. I think it's hilarious to see how kids learn to write their names. Ben has really had some interesting variations on his letters. :) I hope I kept at least a few samples.

  4. How exciting that she is wanting to write and wrote her name! I will jump for joy Noah does this!

What a great milestone!! The first written name… so cute!!! Preschool or not, she is learning so much.

  6. Ooo I like those worksheets. I'm not a big fan of worksheets, but Ainsley is one of those kids that likes them for some reason. I'm going to print some off. Thanks :)

  7. Emma is so cute.

We play school a lot too, although I do try and nudge our curriculum in certain directions. I wanted to homeschool, but my daughter has been asking to start going to school for the last year, so we'll be going to a parent co-op preschool starting next month…

We love playing with our pattern blocks too. My daughter gets really nervous and unhappy that she can't line up the blocks with the pattern sheets perfectly, I need to just take the pattern sheets off the play school shelf.

  8. She's so sweet. Just teach her what she wants to know and leave the backfilling for her teachers.

  9. Way to go, Emma! My daughters still become really excited when they write the letters in their names.

I remember doing the same thing with the capital "E" that starts my name. Way to go Emma!!
