Learning Laboratory: Boston Museum of Science

learning about electricity at the Boston Museum of Science

We spent Black Friday at the Boston Museum of Science! It was crowded, but not as crowded as on our previous visit. The museum is huge; we managed to spend the day there and see only exhibits we had not seen the previous time. This time the kids were especially fascinated with the electricity exhibit (above) and the bees – which are tucked away into a corner, but very cool to watch!

Do you see Emma and Johnny’s reflections in the glass? We had been invited by the museum to check out their Mammoths and Mastodons exhibit, which Emma (six years old) enjoyed.

The museum also gave us tickets to the Omni film, Journey into Amazing Caves. Mike and I were transfixed! The movie was incredible – we saw cavers going over waterfalls in kayaks, rappelling hundreds of feet, and descending into an ice cave. It was a film that would have been visually stunning on any screen, but projected onto the five-story-tall dome screen of the Mugar Omni Theater was amazing. Emma (six years old) and Johnny (4 years old) liked the movie, but sound-sensitive Emma said it got too loud (she just covered her ears). Lily (three years old) would have liked for the movie to be about ten minutes shorter.

I definitely recommend the museum and the show, and if you can’t make it to the Boston Museum of Science you should check out Nancy’s Expedition Diary to learn about extremophiles and to get a taste of the incredible caving adventures we got to see on film!

Learning Laboratory is a space to share the fun, creative, hands-on learning that happens in everyday life. Here are a few posts that I liked last week:

Share your favorite hands-on, creative, and fun learning posts via my Facebook page or in the comments to my Learning Laboratory posts (this post, for this week). I will be posting links that are shared to my Pinterest Boards – including my Learning Laboratory board, and sharing a few favorites each week.

Have you ever been to an Omni theater? What do you like about science?

The Boston Museum of Science gave my family tickets to their exhibit halls and to the “Journey into Amazing Caves” Omni film. All opinions are my own.

  1. Wow, we’ve never been to the learning lab at MOS. Sounds really fun. We went to the MFA over break — another huge museum that holds the crowds! We’ll have to check it out!

    1. learning lab is a series here – I probably should have made that more clear. They do have a discovery center that we’ve never been in, because it is always packed!

  2. What a great way to spend a day off! Love the excitement in the electricity photo and that you captured your kids’ reflection in the bee photo.

What I like about science is how much we can learn about the Creator (and ourselves) by studying the universe systematically.

  3. I’ve been thinking about taking my little guy on a train ride to Boston, then having a little adventure there (as if the train ride weren’t enough!). The Museum of Science could be waiting for us!

  4. We love museums like this so much, my kids never tire of them and as soon as we’re done they are already planning our next trip. I love seeing nature documentaries on those dome screen too, it literally takes your breath away. It’s fun to see the background of all the building materials before the movie begins too.
