Learning Laboratory: Astronaut Ice Cream

Tasting Astronaut Ice Cream

When Mike got stuck overnight at Dulles airport due to a snowstorm last month he made the most of it by visiting the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. He was especially excited to see the space shuttle Enterprise, and he brought back some astronaut ice cream for the kids. It was a big hit, and the freeze-dried strawberries that came in the same pack were delicious!

Mike says the Enterprise was much larger than he expected – hopefully the kids and I get a chance to visit and see it for ourselves, some day!

Oh, that sounds like great fun!! I would love to visit the Enterprise! Looks like the kids really enjoyed their astronaut ice cream too! :-)

  2. Well, when we tried this last year, Hanna and I thought it was good, but Joe could not stand it–LOL! Glad it was a hit with your crew!

  3. I am positive that Anna would love this ice cream – especially after devouring so many space books. I hope to visit the shuttle with her if and when we fly via Dulles.

  4. What a great way to redeem that unexpected time away!

I remember astronaut ice cream being dry but tasty. You can buy it at malls here in Western Australia, but I haven’t been tempted. Not nearly as cool when there aren’t any space shuttles lying around!

This reminds me of the NASA space pen/pencil urban legend: http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp

I can’t believe I’ve still never tried that stuff. And is it just me, or does your eldest look so old in this photo?!

  6. Blech! I remember how excited I was the first time I tried astronaut ice cream. I was in elementary school and visiting DC for the first time. (We bought it at one of the Smithsonians.. I’m guessing Air and Space). It was so gross! But I’m glad your kids got a big kick out of it.

  7. Not fun Mike was delayed but so fun he brought back something interesting for the kids to try! Did it cause any astronaut play to ensue?

  8. I remember eating Astronaut Ice Cream when I was little! It is funny how memories you completely forgot about can come flooding back. I hope the kids were as excited as I was.

  9. I love love love the purple dress!! It is adorable, and I have always been to chicken to try astronaut food lol…

  10. Astronaut ice cream! Ah, I KNEW it could be bought somewhere other than NASA. Now, if they also have astronaut pot roast, pizza, stew, stroganoff, spaghetti-and-meatballs, chicken alfredo pasta, toast-and-jam, pancakes, I’ll buy those in bulk to feed the family so I can sew all through meal times! He he!

  11. Did you have a linky up this week? I wrote a post to join in.

My brother used to love astronaut ice cream. But, it sounds like most people aren’t as big of fans.
