How to Keep Kids Curious About Science!

CuriousKidFrontCover

Do you remember when I wrote about my bloggy friend Asia’s book, 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids? She is back with a new book, one that will keep kids curious about science throughout their growing up years, and I get to be part of her kick-off book tour! Asia sent us a copy of the book to review, and the kids and I love it.

The Curious Kid’s Science Book has over 100 creative hands-on science activities for kids aged 4-8 years old. The book combines popular elementary school science projects with several new ideas that I haven’t seen before. My kids are anxious to try building their very own root viewer (the link leads to a post about a commercially made one we were given as a gift a few years ago).

The activities in this book are accessible to young children, and with a few exceptions, they use everyday household supplies. For the harder-to-find items, there is a resource at the end of the book showing where to buy them. Asia is also selling a kit with several of these harder-to-find items for a limited time. The experiments are set up to get kids thinking like proper scientists, asking what their hypothesis (guess) is as to what will happen and providing prompts as to what data they should be gathering. Extension activities are offered for many of the activities, and real-life applications are added to others. The photos are stunning. If you have an elementary school aged child who needs to find a science fair project, this is your book! I also think that it is an incredible resource for homeschoolers and afterschoolers.

What are your kids learning about in science this year? I’m not sure about my second grader and first grader but my fourth grader’s curriculum is all about California, including the science portion!

I haven’t decided on any formal curriculum for science, but this might be the answer!

How interesting that the 4th grade science curriculum is state-based. Good thing there is a lot of science going on in California. :)
