Exploring Geography: South Carolina

Today’s Exploring Geography post is all about South Carolina! JDaniel4’s Mom blogs about raising her four year old son, the adventures they have, the special meals they create, the crafts they make, and the learning they do. You can find her on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. I love her recycled fish mobile, olympic-themed activities for kids, and this pipe cleaner weaving activity!

I am so excited about sharing where I live with you today. My family live outside Greenville, South Carolina which is in the northern part of the state. Here in South Carolina it is called the Upstate.

Exploring Geography: South Carolina

When most people think of South Carolina, they think of the beach and family travels to North Myrtle Beach about three hours away each fall. We have a great time there, but our part of the state has more rolling hills, river activities, and cities with wonderful cultural areas.
If you want to play in the water near our town, you can go to downtown Greenville and play in the fountains beside the Reedy River. The fountains are one of JDaniel’s favorite places to play in the summertime.

After visiting the fountains, you can walk down to the Children’s Garden in Linky Stone Park. It has a variety of plants for children to explore arranged in child friendly ways. There are areas set up to help you explore your five senses as well as plants for each letter of the alphabet.

Once you have finished exploring downtown, you may want to head to the suburbs where we live and have some Carolina barbeque. My family loves to go to a local barbeque chain called Bucky’s.  JDaniel and I took my mom there recently for her birthday.

They offer ribs, chicken or pork along with your choice of twelve sides.  We each selected pork barbeque this time. My mom selected baked and green beans. JDaniel and I had the macaroni and cheese and the sweet potato crunch.

The sweet potato crunch is cream sweet potatoes with a brown sugar crunch. As I looked around the restaurant, I saw that most of the plates contained some of it.  Sweet potatoes are very popular here in South Carolina.

After a full meal, you might want to  head home to take a nap. You have  just had a busy morning taking in just a few of the wonderful things to do in Greenville, South Carolina.

Thank you, JDaniel4’s Mom, for this post. I think my kids would love that Children’s Garden in Linky Stone Park!

  1. Those fountains look amazing! My boys love water play and splash grounds. We don’t have anything like that around here. They would have a blast.

  2. We live in the Upstate, as well. You are right, only “scratched the surface” of things to do in the Greenville area. I’ve lived here for almost 10 years now, around 5 of those with kids. It is a great area to live, and a great area for family activities. We were members at the children’s museum a couple of years ago (when we lived closer to downtown), and this year we’re doing the Zoo membership.

  3. You know me…I want to visit every state! I want to explore every nook and cranny! South Carolina is one we haven’t been to, and yet…it’s on my TO DO LIST!!!

  4. I think I would like to go to the children’s garden and follow it up with some of that BBQ with sweet potatoes – thanks for the look at Greenville : )

  5. It’s so nice to see how other people live in other cities. I don’t get to travel much, so whenever I’m somewhere else, it feels surreal. Even now, I imagine that my city probably feels so exotic to someone else as I feel about theirs.

  6. We’ve played at Myrtle Beach but never Greenville. Definitely looks like a fun family area. Thanks for sharing at Tuesday’s Travels . That BBQ just made me hungry yum!

Even though I’ve just had breakfast, my mouth waters at the thought of Carolina BBQ!
