Easy First Sewing Projects for Kids

easy first sewing project for kids

Lily LOVES sewing, so I’m always looking for simple sewing projects for kids that she can do (she’s only two and a half, even though she often refuses to believe that fact…) that still give her a sense of accomplishment. This little flower was a slightly more complex version of the sewn felt trees the kids made in December. We took two different colors of felt, and layered a single circle with a three-petal flower layer, followed by a five-petal flower layer in a somewhat imperfect homage to Fibonacci (because that makes my math-adoring husband happy). No in-process photos, because I gave my two-year-old a needle, and that requires closer supervision than a camera will allow!

The next step is to stitch the flower to one of Lily’s tops – once she decides where she wants it! In the meantime, I have one proud and happy two-year-old, which is what it’s really all about. :)

  1. I thought this was a lovely little project, so I tried it with my 3~6 year old students. It’s a little challenging for some, but the children who enjoy sewing LOVE it!

    1. So glad it was a hit with some of your students! Sewing is definitely more enjoyable (and intuitive) for some children than others.

  2. Adorable. We have done a little sewing too.. and this reminds me, that we must have another go. My son loves it.

    1. Funny how that happens, isn’t it!

I didn’t start sewing until I was at least 4 – but Mike sewed and crocheted (!) at 2. Still haven’t figured out how he was crocheting so young.

  3. I love and appreciate your sewing ideas..because my girls all love sewing..which they have taught themselves..and you help me think of ideas to give them! Thanks!

This is super- and my favorite part is that you alluded to Fibonacci…your hubby must be crazy cool….One of these days, I want to make crafty moebius strips with my kids… :)

    1. He’ll be thrilled that you said that! And yes, he is crazy cool, that’s why I married him :)

  5. That is amazing and what a stylish girl she will be. (I can’t believe she didnt’ try to stab any siblings in the eye, tattoo herself using paints or any of the other things that J the same age would try)

    1. Shockingly, she has never gotten the needle end anywhere near her fingertip (or anything else that could be injured). She clearly has better hand-eye coordination than I do!

My daughters have been showing more interest in sewing. I like the idea of using felt, since it’s a little thicker to grasp! We’ll have to try it out! :)

    1. I LOVE felt for first sewing projects! You don’t have to worry about the fabric fraying, and the needle slides through effortlessly.
