Dinosaur Train Cake!

Johnny's dinosaur train cake!

All three of my kids are fans of Dinosaur Train on PBS, so when I found a silicone train cupcake mold on sale I knew exactly what to make for Johnny’s birthday cake! This dinosaur train cake was super easy to make. The dinosaurs are made from candy melts and a dinosaur chocolate mold. The windows/wheels (depending how you look at it) are m&m’s (always a hit in our home!), and the frosting is actually Nutella.

This dinosaur train cake is actually made out of cupcakes. You can use regular cake batter, but cupcakes are designed to be denser and so might hold together better. We used a cupcake recipe, and it turned out great. All three kids helped make the batter for the cupcakes, but I took them out of the pan and frosted them after putting the kids to bed. I also made the dinosaurs on my own, just to simplify things. They were pretty excited to see the completed cake the next morning!

the cake was a hit with the birthday boy!

Our dinosaur train cake was a hit with Johnny and his little birthday play date attendees! We had a super fun, mellow party – I pulled the rug out of the living room, put down our car play mat instead, and brought out all our trains and cars. I would have added in some dinosaurs, but we don’t actually have any of those (yet). Little boy parties are the best!

Awesome cake! I think I’ll try it out with these super-cute dino blast party supplies I picked up for my little guy’s 2nd birthday!!

  2. Trains is the theme we are using for J-jo’s birthday this year(I know, it isn’t til August, but planning parties stresses me out even if only for family). I would NEVER have thought to use Nutella as frosting. Your cake is lovely.

  3. The cake turned out wonderfully! Looks delicious too. You did a super job as always! Cute picture of Johnny too! BTW, so glad you survived the party with his buddies:-).

  4. That is AMAZING!! And both my older kids would love it! We’ve recently discovered Dinosaur Train, although they’ve been into dinosaurs in general for a few years now.

  5. I love this cake!!! And I love how excited they all look!

Would you e-mail me your mailing address? I’d love to get something in the mail to you… you know… since I never got the e-mail info from the childproofing people (Rhoost) to get your product to you. SO VERY SORRY ABOUT THAT!!!
