Butterfly Crafting

butterfly craft

On Sunday, we decided to give another craft from the Small Hands Creating Hope book a go.
These butterflies (ours are slightly different from the version in the book) were submitted by Sun Hats and Wellie Boots. I especially love the transparent wings!

We didn’t have any plastic sheeting available to make wings, so I took a laminating pouch, opened it up, and had the kids color the inside with Sharpie pens. This has the added bonus that the pen ink is permanently enclosed inside the plastic.

Once the laminating pouch was sealed, we cut it into wing shapes, added pipe cleaner bodies and bead eyes, and it was time to play! The kids love that they can slide their fingers between the butterflies’ bodies and wings to easily carry them around:

Emma was even inspired to make up a (very quietly sung) butterfly song:

Do you have another favorite butterfly craft to share? My kids enjoyed sewing butterflies, and I adore this caterpillar to butterfly craft for kids. One year my three girls even dressed up as butterflies for Halloween!

  2. OMG, I’ve done so many butterfly crafts with kids, and I never saw or thought of that idea! thats why I love coming to your blog. ;)

  3. Oh, I love those. The boys are really into looking for butterflies but we’ve not seen that many this year. Maybe because it’s very dry here? We’ll just have to make some!

Those are GORGEOUS!!! And beautiful singing from Emma, too. :) Lovely, lovely, lovely.

    1. Aren’t they pretty? I love the effect of the transparent wings- makes them feel very butterfly-ish to me, somehow.

I saw transparent-wing butterflies in real life once, in a rain forest in Nicaragua (parents lived there while I was in college). You could see the blue veins in their wings – absolutely stunning.

Your butterflies turned out so beautifully! What a great idea to use the laminating pocket in place of acetate. Sweet video too!

    1. Thank you, Ness! I had to include that video, she was singing so sweetly on the swing :)
