Baby Mei Tai Carrier

baby carrier from mccalls M5678

I made this baby carrier for my sister using McCalls pattern M5678. I really like how it turned out, and for once I didn’t even change the pattern! If you want to try making a Mei Tai carrier, I recommend the pattern – just wait to buy it during one of JoAnn’s $1.99 pattern sales! I made the carrier for my sister whose baby is due at the end of this month, but both Lily and Baby A (see the photo from yesterday’s post) gave it their approval. Actually, I believe Baby A has claimed it as his own until Baby J makes his appearance, either at the end of this month or early in February…

The fabric is some I bought for $2/yard at a warehouse while I was in high school. I must have bought a ton of it, because I still have some left, and I know I used it to make a pair of pajama bottoms that I wore for years!

  1. Are you kidding me?! You are amazing! I LOVE this!! And, I love this picture of you and Lily.

Your sister is going to be so happy to get this!

  2. Baby carriers are so expensive, it’s great that you could make your own and get a couple uses out of that pattern! And wow, since high school…it’s nice to know someone else has had things in their craft horde longer than me!

  3. Beautiful picture and great job making the Mei Tai carrier, it looks great and really comfortable!!

  4. Looks so cute and comfy. I have one that my Mom used for me when I was a baby and she was overseas. Of course, the straps weren’t quite long enough for me, and I was a little worried about the viability of 30 year old straps…….

  5. I love the picture, and how nice that you had this fabric stash just waiting for the right time :)

    1. @Amber Liddle – this one has light padding in the straps for the first foot or so, then nothing so there isn’t the bulk for tying on the carrier.

@Natalie – yes, it was great to find a project for the fabric!

@Two Chicks and a Hen – I love Mei Tai carriers for tiny babies especially – they are so soft!
