Art and Snow! Surviving winter with young children

Art in the winter with young children and enjoying snow with littles. Parenting tips for surviving winter with young children.

Surviving winter with young children is all about finding quiet activities you can do! I’m all about getting kids outside in winter, but the truth is sometimes they get all geared up, stay outside for maybe five minutes, then want to come in because it’s just so cold outside!

This week was all about art and snow! The girls spent quite a bit of time painting, mostly while Johnny was at school. Lily and Johnny tend to play with cars or other small toys while Emma is at school.

Lily drew this adorable baby, complete with a belly button:

Johnny also drew a baby! I’m not sure if he is juggling the balls, or if they are merely decorative:

Emma is very into cartoons, and this is a recent favorite. The big fish says, “I what [want] food.” Then there is an arrow to an alarmed (aqua-colored) fish, labeled “food”. And a happy navy blue fish swims happily, labeled “He doesn’t see that fish.”

Six-year-old humor

The highlight of the week for the kids, without question, was the snow! We even got a snow day on Thursday, when we had over half a foot of snow! I love snow days – plenty of time to play and nowhere we have to go!!! I doubt it would have been called as a snow day last year, but it’s March and we still have two snow days to spare, even after Thursday!

enjoying snow!

Of course, you can always bring in the snow for a little extra winter themed play time! Painting with icicles is another favorite in our house!

  1. I love that you encourage art with your kids!
    The pictures are adorable!
I have to admit…we have missed the snow this year! :(
    but…embracing the wonderful weather! :)

  2. Love the drawings – Emma’s cartoon is very impressive! How interesting that you finally have snow. We are planning our first barbecue today :)

  3. Cute drawings. We never really got a snow this year. A light dusting, but that’s it. I’m kind of bummed. However, I do remember getting a near blizzard in late March last year, so anything is possible!

Love the paintings! Belly buttons are key. :) Also important to keep babies entertained with lots of balls to play with. :) And Emma’s cartoon is well thought-out! Glad you enjoyed the snow day!

  5. That is the sweetest baby with a belly button! It always cracks me up when kids get to the stage where all of the people they draw have belly buttons – funny how a belly button is universally important to small children. :) Love the decorative (or juggling) balls in Johnny’s picture, which reminded me of something I read recently – about how boys draw verbs (ACTION)and girls draw nouns. :) Emma’s fish and labels are hilarious; literally made me laugh out loud. :)
