All About Water

playing in water some more

Playing in water after a rainstorm.

My kids LOVE water. Playing with water – watching it in a stream, feeling it on our street after a storm, playing at the kitchen sink, filling containers with water and using syringes to transfer the water from one container to another – will occupy them for hours. They take for granted that, whenever they want water, they turn on the tap!

Our town does not, unfortunately, supply fresh mountain spring water like the city of Vienna, Austria. How I miss that amazing water!!! So we make do by filtering our tap water using the Whirlpool filter I reviewed here. The kids bring water to school in Contigo Kids Trekker Cups, and we always drink filtered water at home. The filtered water doesn’t compare to Vienna’s, but it is definitely much-improved! The one area where I’m on the fence, is filtering water for cooking. For soup and oatmeal, I filter it. For pasta, where the water mostly gets poured off, I don’t.

Do you filter your pasta water?

Do your kids love playing in water? Here are a few favorite water activities from our house:

One not-so-fun water activity? Learning about ice dams! Luckily we have been snow-free since Snowtober this year, so no worries there – yet, at least!

  1. I don’t filter my water for cooking!
I probably should…infact, I’m not very good at filtering my water on a regular basis!
I need to do better…I’m going to check out your filter system!

My kids love playing with water too! I like your syringe idea. I know my kids would love that. We have a filter, but it hasn’t been replaced in a long time. I think I need to check on that.

  3. I don’t filter water for meals, but we use filtered water from our fridge for drinking. We are lucky to leave in an area where the quality of tap water is pretty good!

  4. My kids love water play! My 6 year old still loves it. If I allowed them they would jump in a puddle, in the winter completely without regard for the consequences! I let them play at the sink with the water at a trickle. I let them do all kinds of crazy things – the other day I let my daughter put milk in a bowl so she could see what it is like to be a cat!

As far as filtering… I think it is an excellent idea. I try and use filtered water as much as possible without making myself crazy, about like what you do. Last year I hear water contaminants from shower mist can be harmful to children!

Also, in case it helps, even in Egypt with the amoeba-infested/heavily chlorinated water there, we didn’t filter any cooking water that boiled fully, such pasta water.

Good idea about using syringes as a filling and emptying water activity for kids! My kids love playing with water, too, but thankfully we don’t need to filter ours at all.

  7. I don’t use filtered water for pasta but we do drink filtered water. It’s so hard to imagine beautiful fresh, good tasting water coming straight from the tap!

  8. If it boils fully, I don’t filter it either. If it doesn’t boil, I filter it. My son loves playing with water colored with food coloring and little paint droppers. He likes mixing the colors and watching them change and swirl. We do it on an overhead projector with a clear container.
